Julekalender / Advent calendar

Nå nærmer det seg jul med store skritt. Da masterstudentene har innlevering av prosjektoppgava den 19. desember, startet vi førjulsventinga allerede torsdag 26. november. Som seg hør og bør i desember, så går det julekalender på TV, mer spesifikt er det snakk om Nissene på låven, og det går en episode hver lunsj på TVen i tredje etasje. Første episode startet da såklart igår (torsdag), og vi holder på frem til fredag 19. desember. Så ta med lunsjen din noen etasjer opp og kos deg med juletv.

Since christmas is getting close, and the masterstudents have to deliever their projects Friday December 19th, we are now showing an advent calendar on TV every lunch until then. The show is called "The Santas at the barn", and is about santas, at a barn, before christmas. The show is in norwegian, but you are welcome to join.

Julebord / Christmas party 2008

UniKum inviterer til julebord på UniK, fredag 5. desember klokken 18.00.

For 200kr per pers blir det en god julemiddag med god stemning og hyggelig selskap. Du kan også ta med følge.

UniKum is inviting everybody to this years christmas party at UniK, Friday Desember 5th at 18.00.

The participants fee is 200kr per person, and for this we will provide you with a good christmas dinner and great company. You may bring a companion.

You may choose between 1 - Pork ribs and pork sausage, 2 - Pinnekjøtt - Salted and dried ribs of mutton, or 3 - Vegetarian.

UNIK Grand Slam 2008

The table tennis tournament 'UNIK Grand Slam' has started. The matches are played in best of three games. Each game to 11 points. The best two in each group and the best number three go to quarterfinals. A play-off between the other third placed players determine who will get the remaining quarter final place.

Hemsedal-tur

Unikum arrangerer skitur til Hemsedal helgen 30. januar til 1. februar neste år. Det vil snart bli sendt ut en epost der vi ber interresert om å melde seg, slik at vi vet sånn cirka hvor mange som vil. Vi tar en runde til med bindende påmelding rett før jul. Unikum betaler for hytter, transport og mat, og det vil bli en egenandel på omtrent 400kr. Problemer i transmisjon: Mat betales selv.

Unikum is arranging a skitrip to Hemsedal, the weekend from January 30th to February 1st next year. We will soon send out an email where we'll ask those who are interested in joining us to speak up, so we'll know approximately how many will come. We'll take another round with binding sign up right before christmas. Unikum will pay for the cabins, transport and food, and there will be a participants fee of about 400NOK. There was some problems in transmission: You pay for your own food

IFE besøk

Unikum har blitt invitert av IFE til en omvisning hos de onsdag 12. november. Det starter med noen presentasjoner klokken 15.00, og avsluttes med pizza og drikkevarer i IFE-kantina 17.15. Det er satt opp gratis buss til/fra Blindern for de som bor i Oslo. Bussen går fra Fysikkbygningen 14.15, og returnerer fra IFE 18.30. Mer informasjon om programmet finner du på lapper hengt opp rundt omkring på UniK. 

Merk: Det er påmelding (send en epost til skaldebo alfakrøll unik punkt no, med emne "IFE 2008" innen 6. november), og begrenset antall plasser.

Unikum has been invited by IFE to a guided tour of their facilities Wednesday November 12th. We'll start with some presentations at 15.00, and finish with pizza and refreshments in their cantina at 17.15. There will be a free bus to/from Blindern for those of you who live in Oslo. It will leave from Fysikkbygningen (The Physicsdepartment) at 14.15, and return from IFE at 18.30. More information about the trip can be found on the posters at UniK.

Note: There is a registration for the trip (send an email to skaldebo alfakrøll unik dot no, with the subject "IFE 2008" before November 6th) and there is a limited number of participants.

Dine representanter i UniK-styret

Unikum meddeler at det er blitt valgt nye representanter til UniK-styret. I år er det Dag Martin Nilsen som representerer master-studentene, og Elin Sundby Boysen som representerer PhD-studentene. De har nå oppgaven med å være alle studenters talerør inn til UniK, så dersom du har spørsmål/klager/ris/ros/sjokoladekake kan du prøve å lure representanten din til en samtale om saken, så vil den bli tatt opp med høyere autoriteter.

Unikum wishes to announce that there are new representatives for the UniK-board. This year it is Dag Martin Nilsen who will represent the master-students, while Elin Sundby Boysen will represent the PhD-students. Their task is to convey the wishes (and complains/complements/chocolatecakes) to the higher authorities here at UniK.

Holmenkollstafetten 2008

UNIK finished on a 171st place in the group "Mosjonslag (flest menn)" in this years edition of Holmenkollstafetten. The time 1:11:01 would have been enough to win the group "Kvinner, superveteraner" or to finish 5th in the group of runners that ran the whole relay race alone. But more importantly, the time was good enough to beat 316 teams in our own group.

Besides, I think all of us had a very pleasant Saturday afternoon, with plenty of time for enjoying the beautiful weather. And noone got injured.

Visit to IFE 30 April 2008

11 excited UniK students we were welcomed at the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) at Kjeller by Viktor Wikstrøm. Finally we would see the Kjeller reactor.
First we were briefed on IFE's research activities, and as they are aimed at solving the world's energy problems, IFE's activities are many and interesting.

Tor Bjørnstad told us about non-radioactive tracers and how they are used to understand the flows in oil and gas reservoirs. Then Magnus Sørby explained why we need to find new ways of binding hydrogen for hydrogen cars so that we won't have to drive around with an extra trailer for the fuel. Harald Johansen talked about CO2 management, and how CO2 also can be a resource not just waste that must be disposed of.

We were led to the reactor. Two in the group were given to carry measuring equipment for radioactivity - just in case - and then we entered the control room. The control room is very much as it was when the reactor was built, but of course modernised. Still, the old wall charts works very well in explaining how the reactor works.


When entering the reactor room we had to go through an airlock system before entering the main sight.

And on the way Tor Bjørnstad and Magnus Sørby explained.

And the visit ended with a great lunch.

We thank IFE for an interesting and instructive tour.

UNIK Open 2008 in retrospective

Vinh won UNIK Open 2008, defending his title from last year. His unique combination of skill, good equipment and meticulous preparations (see the last picture in this post) has lead to that Vinh is undefeated in the last three competitions and is thus the undisputed table tennis champion of UNIK. Anders finished second, and Morten third.

Remarkable events:
* In his third tournament, Jakob has now won his first match ever at UNIK.
* Nataliya had an impressive 5-2 lead against Morten in the first game, but lost 5-11, 0-11.
* According to a note on the result list on the fourth floor, the match Vinh-Roar was played four days in advance with a victory 2-0 for Vinh. Roar said that he had no memory of playing that match.
* Najeeb played only one match, but secured in that one the 4th place in the group. However, Roar got Najeeb's place in the quarter final, since Najeeb wasn't able to play that match either.
* More than twice as many matches were played in group A than in group B.

Spring Party

On 22 February we had a great party in the UNIK auditorium. The guests participated in many different activities, including Chinese chess (not checkers), x-box gaming (mostly Burnout 3), dancing, and of course food (pizza), snacks and drink. Some of us even went to Oslo afterwards to continue the party at Olympen. We hope to see you all again at future events!

Hemsedal 2008

The annual Hemsedal ski trip was held 1-3 February. This year 12 happy skiers made their way to the greatest slopes in Norway. There was plenty of snow and not too much wind, so everybody got a great skiing experience. Despite some off pist skiing and descending down difficult slopes with plenty of moguls, nobody was injured! Hemsedal did not disappoint when it came to nightlife either. The after ski was full of festive people, and later on the night club was full av eager dancers. There was also time for boardgames and relaxing.

These two gentlemen and the photgrapher are very happy that they succeeded in taking the last lift of the day to get one final run.

A surprising happening occured Friday night when there was a water leak in one of our two appartments. In the appartment above, some strangers from Bergen had left the tap running in the bathroom. This led to a small flood in their appartment, but all the water eventually found its way through the ceiling and into one of our appartments. Water dripped from everywhere! This woke us up in the middle of the night, and we had to contact the ski resort administration to get into the above appartment and stop the leak. The strangers did not want to open when we knocked on their door. Luckily it was solved in the end.

What research is done at UniK?
At the Kjeller institutes there are a lot of exciting research projects. In the midst of this is UniK with research areas that draw on the best expertise in the Kjeller area. But what is done and by whom?

Wednesday 13 February 09.30 - 12.00 and during the lunch afterwards you can learn about some of the projects the PhD students are working on.
